Question: How big does a cake have to be to accommodate a hundred candles?
Answer: Bloody massive.
The cake had been my responsibility. Earlier that day, I’d gone to the Blanfords’ Bakery to pick it up from Ellen and Martha. I saw it at once – extravagant and proud of it. A large, towering cake, working its way up the seven or so layers in a never ending spiral, it was intricately iced with a smooth slope paved for the candles to weave up and up.
